Time for tee! Local teams get set for Autism Jersey’s Annual Golf Day

Autism Jersey’s annual Golf Day, sponsored by JT, tees off on Friday 10 August. Organisers are promising this year will be the biggest and best yet.

The money raised at this year’s Golf Day will go towards funding the building and running, of a residential and community-based Autism centre in the Island. Hence why this is the most important event on Autism Jersey’s fundraising calendar.

The annual event has 22 local teams taking part. And it will be the first large event hosted at La Moye Golf Club’s new clubhouse, which has just undergone a £3.5m refurbishment. The day of competition will end with a raffle and auction. This will include  donations by former world number one Ernie Els. Last year over £20,000 was raised for the charity from this one day event.

Mr Els and his wife Liezl have a son with autism and founded The Els for Autism Foundation in 2009. This aims to support people on the autistic spectrum fulfil their potential to lead positive, productive and rewarding lives. The foundation has worked on a number of events and programmes in partnership with Autism Jersey.

A Popular Sell-Out Event

Nick Winsor, Chairman of Autism Jersey, said: “This is our biggest fundraiser so we’re grateful to everyone taking part and to our sponsor JT. To have a corporate sponsor of the calibre of JT is essential to the event’s success and their professionalism. Their focus on the Jersey community, and on-going support guarantees a popular sell-out event year-on-year that makes a huge contribution to the Charities work.”

Daragh McDermott, Corporate Affairs Director at JT, said: “As a board member of Autism Jersey, I know only too well what a fantastic charity it is. It offers invaluable support to many families and the wider community. Therefore, JT is delighted to support Autism Jersey. Also to support them in their fundraising efforts by sponsoring, participating in and providing the prizes for this phenomenally popular annual golf day at La Moye Golf Club. We’re proud to be a locally-owned business and support our Island communities whenever and wherever we can.”

JT shortlisted for top national Customer Experience Awards

JT is a finalist in two categories of this year’s UK Customer Experience Awards. This is the biggest ‘CX’ event of its kind in the world. Now in its ninth year, the UK Customer Experience Awards recognise those inspiring organisations who are delivering an outstanding customer experience. JT has been shortlisted in the ‘Best International Business’ and ‘CX Team of the Year’ categories.

JT’s submissions also focus on how it introduced new, far-reaching and innovative Customer Experience standards. Also their training to focus on ‘delighting’ customers. JT began a journey in 2015 to improve customers experience as part of a strategy to transform the business.  It has transformed from an on-island telecoms provider to a world-class communications brand. And has pioneered digital technology supported by first-class customer experience. This was implemented throughout the organisation by a specially trained, committed and focused team. Because of this a positive increase in levels of customer, client and employee satisfaction and engagement has been seen.

Customer Experience is a Journey Not a Destination

Tamara O’Brien, JT’s Head of Customer Experience, said: “JT has invested a lot of time and energy into improving our customer experience. So, hearing the news we are finalist in two major categories at Britain’s top CX awards against some global operators and brands is testament to the hard work of a very dedicated CX team who represent first and foremost the Voice of our Customers. The most important validation, however, is from our customers themselves. Customers who consistently tell us that JT staff are polite, knowledgeable and helpful. Also, customer experience is a journey not a destination. While we are pleased with the progress we are making, keep our customers’ needs right at the heart of our business. Therefore, ensuring we as a team represent their voice, is central to our strategy of continuous improvement.”

The other shortlisted organisations in the Best International Business Category are: Medallia in partnership with Generali, Barclays, CPM International (New Tech Division), Airbnb and Thomson Reuters. In the CX Team of the Year category, JT is alongside: Cross Country, Lowell, O2 Telefonica and BT Corporate.

The ceremony on 11 October at Wembley Stadium will be where the winners will be announced.

Virtual Reality eSports Team

JT partners with world’s leading professional Virtual Reality eSports team

JT has given its backing to a group of young technology pioneers who have formed the first professional organisation. With players competing in global Virtual Reality eSports competitions. JT has become the global sponsor of “Team Gravity”, founded by Jersey resident Tim McGuinness. The team competes in the game Echo Arena, which is a three-versus-three-person game of virtual ‘Ultimate Frisbee’. However, it plans to compete in more eSports and has recently recruited its fourth member.

The team competes on a weekly basis but also attends major eSports events, such as ESL One in Hamburg. and IEM Katowice in Poland. This is the biggest gaming event in the world, attracting 173,000 people and an online audience of 46 million. Team Gravity recently finished first in the European Stage Finals of Echo Arena and is looking to qualify for the World Finals.

Mr McGuinness said: “eGaming and eSports have been around for some time. But the addition of Virtual Reality takes it to a new level and is a growing global phenomenon. With VR, it is much more akin to playing a sport than a game. You need to train and you need to have the right mentality as you can play for up to three hours non-stop. It is a full body workout requiring great fitness, dexterity and skill.

“JT’s sponsorship will be crucial for us as Team Gravity grows in this brand-new industry, which has huge prospects as technology develops even further. As a player, I also have a lot to thank JT for; in the virtual space, I will be playing against people around the world, even my own teammates are based in Sweden and Germany. We rely on having a super-fast internet connection, and with JT’s full-fibre network in Jersey, I know I have the ultimate bandwidth to compete at the highest level.”

Tamara O Brien, Head of Customer Experience at JT said: “JT has been at the forefront of communications technology for more than 120 years. So, supporting VR eSports – which is fast becoming a global movement – is a great fit. Especially as Team Gravity also has a strong local connection through Tim. We’re proud to support Tim and his teammates with both funding and technology, to help them grow and develop. We wish them every success in the forthcoming World Qualifiers. We’re also looking at further local opportunities to work together in the near future. This will help show young islanders the possibilities this exciting growing sport has to offer. Watch this space.”

Le Quennevais School

JT supports transition programme at Les Quennevais School

Forming a new and unique partnership, JT is sponsoring next month’s Year 6 Transition Programme at Les Quennevais School. This ensures that students arriving in September already feel part of the school family.

All students who will be joining Year 7 in September 2018 are invited to a briefing at the school, with their parents, on Thursday 5 July. They will be formally welcomed by the Headteacher, Sarah Hague, and her team. Part of the evening meeting with parents will be dedicated to an increasingly important part of school life today: the importance and understanding of e-safety. This is why Les Quennevais and JT have partnered to give parents and their children an insight into how to stay safe online.

Supporting Parents and Children in e-safety

Mrs Hague said: “Our new partnership with JT is an exciting development as we work together to nurture, inspire and develop next year’s intake into what will become, the class of 2023! We are particularly keen to support parents and their children in e-safety. It formed a small part of the briefing last year and the feedback from parents was that they found it particularly useful in a world where technology now plays such a pivotal role within our schools in supporting and enabling learning. This year school leaders and experts in this area from JT will expand on helping parents understand the ways we can work together to keep our young people safe online and the tools available to help them to do so.”

JT’s Haandle box

Tamara O Brien, Head of Customer Experience at JT said: “We welcome this new opportunity to partner with Les Quennevais School. As a responsible provider we have always taken our responsibility seriously in playing our part to help educate. We aim to enable parents and children to be aware of how to stay safe online. And provide tools and educational literature to help ensure children are made aware of the dangers which can exist. We also provide leading edge equipment to enable parents. They can stay in control of what their children are accessing to help protect them. At this transition briefing we will be demonstrating some practical ways to help. This includes the Haandle box, exclusive to JT, an affordable piece of technology which allows parents to control internet access. We also offer controls within the exclusive free JT apps.

One of our presentation team, Zac Parrish, is a former Les Quennevais student. So he’s looking forward to sharing his own experiences and answering any questions. Recognising the importance of technology in education. We’ll also be donating some JT Smart 2 phones to students for use, of course with their parents’ consent. E-safety is all about a balance of education, awareness and providing the right tools. We’re excited to participate in this event.”

Four billion mobile transactions

JT processes four billion mobile transactions in 2017

JT is now ranked among the global leaders for managing text messages on behalf of business customers having processed a record-breaking four billion mobile transactions in 2017.

The Channel Islands’ only locally owned telecoms company has built long-term partnerships with many international mobile network operators. It has signed more than 750 roaming agreements to allow its customers to connect wherever they are in the world. Building on those networks, JT has developed products to help other operators monetise their own services. One of these is messaging for texts (SMS) and ‘Home Location Registers’ (HLR). This allows carriers to determine the home country and network of a mobile subscriber. JT provides portability information for routing of messages purposes. Thus, making sure that carriers send messages in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

In the Business of Messaging

Tom Noel, Managing Director of JT International, the division responsible for growing the group’s global business, said: “JT has been in the business of messaging since its conception and has been one of the industry’s leading pioneers. Reaching four billion transactions is a significant milestone for us. It moves us closer to our goal of becoming the Operator of Operators for Messaging.

“Despite the growth of services such as WhatsApp and Snapchat, messaging remains preferred method to reach a customer. Big players like Google, Facebook and Apple all use it. It provides two-factor authentication. Chatbots are also becoming popular, especially in call-centre environments. Although some people have predicted the end of messaging, it is very much alive and well, and our growth confirms this.”

As well as messaging, JT International has also developed niche products in the areas of global roaming, fraud protection and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Jt Wins Connected Britain Award

JT wins Fibre Connectivity Award for ground-breaking network

JT has been recognised at the Connected Britain Awards, announced at the end of the UK’s premier conference on communications technology this week. The Channel Islands’ largest and only locally owned telecoms operator won the Fibre Connectivity Award for its pioneering Gigabit full-fibre network.

In winning the award, JT was recognised above some significant other shortlisted organisations involved in fibre technology. This included Digital Scotland, Gigaclear and Grosvenor Group.

The organisers, Total Telecom, described this win as:

This was another tightly contested category, and one that carried a good deal of prestige, given the UK’s renewed focus on fibre networks. JT Group claimed victory in this category with their ambitious project on the island of Jersey (more information here).

This award is timely as this year Jersey will become the world’s first full-fibre jurisdiction.  Every residential and business broadband customer will be directly connected to a network that offers unrivalled internet upload and download speeds. The judges praised JT’s foresight. They also commended the way the project was managed and delivered.

National Recognition

JT Chief Executive Officer Graeme Millar, who accepted the award in London, said: “We’re clearly delighted that our Gigabit project has been singled out at such a prestigious event. Choosing to replace our copper network with a full-fibre one back in 2012 was a bold decision to make. We’ve always known that it was the right one, though. It’s obviously pleasing to now receive national recognition for our efforts. JT started the journey of rolling out our network years in advance of the point at which it would be required. Therefore, we’re now at a place where many other jurisdictions want to be.

“We’ve laid over 3,000 km of individual fibre-optic cable to almost 40,000 homes and 5,000 businesses. Hence, 100 per cent of broadband customers are to be connected to full-fibre. Jersey will have the highest fibre-to-the-home penetration in the world. That is something the whole Island can be proud of.

“Our success at the Connected Britain Awards is down to the cumulative effort of a huge team of people. Therefore, I would like to publicly thank my colleagues and all our stakeholders for their enduring hard work and support. As well as the support of our customers, whose needs were central to the vision of this project.”

Super League winners

New JT Fan Zone to create festival atmosphere at Super League Triathlon

JT – the official Technology Partner of September’s Super League Triathlon in Jersey is expanding its support this year to bring a wide selection of entertainment, food and games to the world-class event; for local islanders and visitors alike.

Building on the huge success last year when JT provided technical support, mobile communications and full-fibre internet access to the broadcast team and race organisers. JT are helping make the weekend of 28-30 September even more of a community event. The FREE JT Fan Zone will be based on the lawn above the Waterfront car park and will include three days of free music, catering from Jersey suppliers, a Tech Zone with games to play, and an activity-filled Kids’ Zone, all free for islanders to enjoy.

The weekend of intense competition will be televised and streamed around the globe. Last year, it attracted a worldwide audience of 375 million people in 147 markets. The live streaming and social media coverage was possible thanks to strength of JT’s full-fibre and mobile network helping power the event. By this September, Jersey will be the first jurisdiction in the world to have every residential broadband property directly connected to fibre. This event is the ideal opportunity to celebrate that achievement.

A Super League Needs a Super-Fast Network

Tamara O’Brien, Head of Customer Experience at JT, said: “A Super League needs a super-fast network to support it. I’m delighted that JT is, once again, the official Technology Partner providing support for this exciting event. As the event grows so does our involvement. We’re proud to be giving something back to Islanders through the new JT Fan Zone. The event is also a great occasion to showcase our 100 per cent full-fibre network to the world. Like the Super League Triathlon, it really puts Jersey on the map. As the island’s only locally owner provider we’re very proud to be even more involved in this event.”

Super League Triathlon Chief Executive Officer Michael D’Hulst said: “Last year was a great success so we’re delighted to be returning to Jersey. We want as many Islanders as possible to come down to see the action. I’m thrilled that JT is making the weekend even more of an event for everyone.”

JT helps Only fools and donkeys fundraising

JT helps Only Fools and Donkeys fundraising cyclists

The Channel Islands’ only locally owned telecoms operator has donated ten new JT Travel Buddy phones. These are a lightweight quad-band phone, with SIM cards. The phones will help coordinate the 53 fundraising cyclists. These cyclists have the option to ride 60, 80 or 100 miles each day over the six-day challenge, which began on Saturday.

JT is supporting the Guernsey charity Only Fools and Donkeys’ latest fundraising endeavour, ‘Mule Loire’. This is a cycle ride through the vineyards of France from Vannes to Château Chambord, just outside Orléans.

The charities

JT has supported the charities’ previous cycles in 2016 and 2014 which collectively raised £74,000. This was for Guernsey charities for children and adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities. Previous recipients have included Le Rondin for their Garden of Remembrance. The Guernsey Sports Association for the Disabled to cover their team travel costs to the annual Bath and West Games has also received funding. And finally, Active to restore and maintain their hydro pool and fund their Christmas lunch for 140 people. Recently, it has funded the installation of a professional standard kitchen in The Village at Le Murier School.

Mike Marshall, co-founder of Only Fools and Donkeys said: “Once again, we’re grateful to JT for their practical support. I remember how important the phones were in 2016. This being our biggest ride to date. They will be invaluable as we organise more than 50 cyclists. Each cyclist riding different distances over six days covering a total of 280 miles, supported by a team of ten in five vehicles.”

Tamara O’Brien, Deputy Managing Director of JT Guernsey said: “JT is delighted to be able to support another Mule ride. I hope these JT Travel Buddy phones help ensure everyone gets safely from A to B through a beautiful part of France. ‘Chapeau’ to everyone taking part.”
