JT makes visit of Ugandan school trip to Jersey one to remember

A Ugandan school has been able to capture the life-changing experience of a visit to Jersey thanks to the donation of smart phones by JT.

Christine Auma is a 14-year-old pupil at Mifumi Primary School. She recently visited Jersey with teachers Margaret Apio and Beatrice Atyang. They were guests of MPS Uganda, a Jersey charity. They have supported the school for almost two decades. MPS Uganda was named Small Charity of the Year at the last Jersey Charity of the Year Awards.

A delegation from a Ugandan primary school have been able to capture the life-changing experience of a visit to Jersey thanks to the donation of smart phones by JT.

While in the Island, the trio visited a number of primary schools and were guests at a gala dinner. This raised £14,000 for the charity, which supports the school in a variety of ways. Also this includes funding equipment and building work, and supplementing teachers’ salaries. Islanders have also helped to build classrooms, dormitories and offices. This was achieved through funding and more directly volunteer teams sponsored by the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission. Overall, the visit raised £30,000 for the charity.

Capturing Special Memories

JT Mobile Manager John Assister said: “We were delighted to donate JT Smart 2 phones to MPS Uganda to make sure that the group were always contactable. This enables them to capture their special memories for prosperity. As always, JT is proud to support many good causes, and this was a great example of being able to help in a practical and impactful way.”

Matt Gorman, chairman of MPS Uganda, said: “We wanted to make sure that Christine, Margaret and Beatrice could take photos and videos to capture their amazing visit. We originally thought of getting some disposable cameras. However, when JT donated the smart phones, we were so grateful. This meant that they could contact friends and family. I know Christine took lots of pictures with her phone. I’m sure she will treasure those memories for a very long time.”

Growth and connectivity combine for a very strong year at JT

JT has today published its Annual Review for 2017, showing an increase in growth and connectivity. Also, a turnover of 41% from £185m to £261m, creating an operating profit for the year of a little over £11m.

The significant increase in JT’s turnover in 2017 mainly comes from growth in its International business. The Group is now signing up more than 1,600,000 mobile devices around the world, connecting equipment from heart monitors to payment systems, ‘smart’ traffic lights, solar farms and livestock trackers.

JT is short-listed for three awards at national digital awards

JT is short-listed for three awards at the 2018 Connected Britain Awards. Connected Britain is an annual conference. The premier meeting place for the UK’s main stakeholders to come together and discuss, learn and collaborate on the UK’s digital future.

The conference, held in London on 19-20 June, hosts leading names from the digital sector, including national and local government, global telecoms operators, regulators and investors.

Respected financial services executive joins JT Group Board

A former Director of Financial Services for the States of Jersey and Head of AIB Bank in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director of JT, joining the JT Group Board.

Jersey-based Joe Moynihan joins the Group Board of the Channel Islands’ largest and only locally owned telecommunications company.

Communications history in Jersey by JT and La Collette flats

La Collette has made communications history in Jersey by being the first part of the Island to remove the copper network in its entirety. Paving the way for a full-fibre future.

The area’s network of copper wires and cabinets – which has served the community reliably for decades – has now been removed. In its place is a full-fibre network. This capable of meeting the demands of today’s residents and businesses. And customers who increasingly rely on products and services delivered digitally.

JT hopes the La Collette copper network project will pave the way for a full-fibre future.

JT achieves accreditation as a Jersey’s living wage employer

JT is the first large local company to committed to paying Jersey’s living wage to its direct employees, which is a major boost for the Caritas Living Wage Project. JT hopes its example will lead the way for other local businesses to register with the scheme, increasing the quality of living for as many people as possible.

JT-sponsored IoD seminar to tackle Guernsey’s air links

The JT-sponsored Institute of Directors winter seminar series will conclude on Friday 13 April by revisiting the important topic of Guernsey’s air links.

The subject was last discussed by the IoD in 2016. This was not long after the regulator had raised concerns about the Blue Islands / Flybe franchise agreement on inter-island routes and
Aurigny’s Alderney services had been criticised following the airline posting a £4.6m loss.
